I have been in regular personal therapy for several years, before and during my counselling training. Through that I had the opportunity to address some long standing issues that were troubling me and preventing me from having a healthier, more balanced and happier life.

I worked in the beginning with psychodynamic therapists, a little with humanistic ones and finally with CBT.

In this process not only I gained a deeper insight into myself but also into the inner reality of all other human beings. By getting more deeply in touch with my own humanity I also became more able to understand the humanity of others.

Through therapy, and particularly through CBT, I also learned very effective strategies and tools that helped me to overcome my difficulties and crucially to prevent me from relapsing into unhealthy states. I still use them regularly today and they help me to stay sane and enjoy my life more fully.

Having been helped personally by CBT so effectively, gave me the encouragement to become a practitioner myself. I feel confident to help my clients because I believe it works, therefore I am not surprised when my clients are able to overcome their issues and leave therapy with a renewed sense of balance – it actually works.

Like many people I meet today, I learned to communicate in an accusing and blaming way and learned little about respecting my feelings and needs, as well as those of others. I encountered countless conflicts, personally and professionally, that caused a lot of damage to all involved and I wanted to find a better way of dealing with them.

Then a few years ago I found a new way of communicating developed by Marshall Rosenberg, Non-Violent Communication. Through my training and work with Parentline Plus and as a community mediator I had the opportunity to deepen the practice of this compassionate way of listening and expressing yourself. My parenting, my personal and professional relationships and my self-respect improved considerably. I am still learning about this.

Prior to all this I spent 19 years studying and working out of the teachings of Rudolf Steiner. During this time I lived and worked in Anthroposophical therapeutic communities, including Camphill, in Portugal and England, where I looked after young people and adults with special needs. I also worked as a teacher in Waldorf/Steiner schools in Scotland and England.

Through my connection with Anthroposophy I learned about the spiritual dimension of Humankind and the Universe, about brotherliness and community living, I developed my creativity through arts, crafts, drama, music and eurythmy.

Recently I reconnected with this approach by engaging in Biographical Counselling. This helped me to understand my life more deeply in the light of destiny. I now intend to develop my understanding of this kind of counselling so that I can offer it to any of my clients who may be interested in the future.

I cultivate an open and curious attitude to life and knowledge and I am always seeking to improve my understanding of therapy and develop my capacity to help my clients. Regular supervision helps me in this process and every new case is an encouragement to study and know more.

I am presently practising yoga and studying and developing my own practice of Mindfulness, as I realise the huge therapeutic value of this art.

I am 57 and I have 6 children, including 2 step children, of two long term relationships.

I lived for 26 years in Britain, in places as far apart as Edinburgh and Ringwood, Hereford and Cambridge.

Recently I spent nearly two years living in a small village in western Algarve. During this time I gave consultations and ran workshops in the Algarve, Lisbon and Porto.

I was born and went to university in Porto but spent most of my childhood in the mountains in the far north of Portugal and as a young adult, I lived for 3 years in Serra da Estrêla.

Amongst other jobs, I have worked as a farmer, a baker, a factory worker and a driver.

I live now in Gloucestershire near the canal.
